Are you already using binaural beats and eager to see and hear what makes our software different? Head to our download page for a two-week free trial of Neuro-Programmer 3! But keep in mind that the sessions may sound very different from what you've heard before. This is not a glitch. What you are hearing is more than just binaural beats- visit our technical page to learn more about our unique approach to brainwave entrainment.

What are binaural beats?

When two tones of slightly different frequency are heard separately in the left and right ears, the listener perceives a single tone that varies at a frequency equal to the difference between the two tones- a perceptual phenomenon known as a binaural beat. Although this effect was discovered in 1839, binaural beats have been the subject of greater public interest in recent years. This is largely due to a number of misconceptions about what they are capable of, but in part it is because they are one of multiple forms of stimulation that can be used in brainwave entrainment.

In short, entrainment occurs when a rhythmic stimulus is used that resembles the natural internal rhythms of the brain, called brainwaves. When this happens, the brain responds by synchronizing its own electric cycles to the same rhythm. There is a proven connection between brainwaves and mental state, which is why entrainment is so useful. For example, brainwaves at the 8-12hz range are associated with a relaxed state of mind, so stimulation using that frequency can help you to actually feel more relaxed.

It is important to note that there are other stimuli that research indicates are more effective than binaural beats for the purpose of brainwave entrainment. One method is using "isochronic tones" - tones that are turned on and off in a precise pattern to produce a pulsing sound that is deeper and better suited to generating a response from the brain. "Monaural beats" are another aural stimulation method- in the image to the left you can see how their sine-wave shape produces easily distinguished waves- this is key because it is much more likely that the brain will be able to synchronize to a rhythm that is clearly defined.

Why use binaural beats and other brainwave stimulation?

When binaural beats are utilized as a stimulus under specific circumstances, early studies have shown evidence of beneficial outcomes such as anxiety reduction and increased concentration. However, even more promising results have been drawn from experiments utilizing additional forms of neural stimulation, and the sessions in NP3 have been meticulously designed to produce the greatest neural response during EEG tests. Here are just a few of the reasons one might use NP3, with links to even more information and supporting research!

Cognition / Attention / Focus: A growing body of research is showing that brainwave stimulation can be an incredibly effective tool to promote attention and focus. Learn more...

Stress Reduction: The sessions included in NP3 are designed to be naturally relaxing, but it also comes with sessions specifically designed for stress and anxiety. Learn more...

Emotional Stability / Mood Support: Decades of neurofeedback research have revealed specific brainwave patterns characteristic of negative moods and overly emotional mental states. Based on this, brainwave entrainment sessions have been developed and recent research is showing it to be a very promising aide in this area. Learn more...

Study help: NP3 can help optimize the brain for studying- users consistently report being more productive and learning more quickly while using NP3. Learn more...

Motivation / Energy: Many users report experiencing a great boost in energy as a result of NP3 sessions, including a "Wake Up" session that can replace caffeine! Learn more...

Deep Meditation: Using NP3 can be likened to a form of "high tech" meditation, where audio and visual patterns are used to guide your mind to the relaxed, focused state experienced during meditation.

What does this software let me do with binaural beats?
  • Listen to over 120 included sessions
Each uses a combination of brain stimulating audio (including binaural beats, monaural beats and isochronic tones) plus relaxing sounds to help you meet a wide variety of goals for mental improvement. Learn more about built-in sessions...

  • Customize your experience with a powerful session editor
NP3 includes many of the features seen in professional sound editing tools- only this editor is designed specifically for brainwave entrainment sessions! Change the length of sessions or the pitch of tones, use copy/paste/undo functionality, and more!

  • Add your own sounds and music to sessions
Using NP3 you can add an unlimited number of background sounds to your session and NP3 will automatically filter the sounds to entrain the brain using a patented and exciting new method of neural stimulation- once you get acclimated to how this works, any music you own or relaxing sounds that you like can be enhanced with scientifically designed neural stimulation!

  • Export the results to create your own MP3, OGG and WAV files

  • Headphones are NOT required!
Because our software does not rely only on binaural beats, many of its sessions can be used to their full effect without headphones! This is especially useful for sessions helping you to sleep, focus on/remember what you are reading, or reduce anxiety/stress during complicated tasks.

What science and research is this software supported by?

It is a recent development that the potential benefits of brainwave entrainment and binaural beats have generated enough interest in the scientific community for research to be done. Despite this fact, there are already a number of published studies available documenting results from experiments with binaural beats, and even more meaningful results from the use of additional entrainment methods (such as isochronic tones, monaural beats, and photic stimulation - all of which are utilized in NP3).

Here are three conclusions to published and peer-reviewed studies on brainwave entrainment:

"Findings to date suggest that BWE [brainwave entrainment] is an effective therapeutic tool. People suffering from cognitive functioning deficits, stress, pain, headache/migraines, PMS, and behavioral problems benefited from BWE." Huang, T., Charyton, C., 2008. Alternative Therapies. Volume 14.1

- "Results suggest that the presentation of binaural auditory beats can affect psychomotor performance and mood. This technology may have applications for the control of attention and arousal and the enhancement of human performance." Lane, J. D., Kasian, S. J., Owens, J. E. and Marsh, G. R., 1998. Physiology & Behaviour. Volume 63.2

- "The eight students from the SPALDING reading program who received AVE [Audio and Visual Entrainment] improved their reading scores more than their classmates who served as controls. The data suggests AVE was a useful experience for the participants. Parents and teachers reported the children were calmer and could focus better. The results met or exceeded our expectations." Joyce, M, and Siever, D., 2000. Journal of Neurotherapy. Volume 4.2
