Sounds pretty strange to me. I would guess that since the University of Oulu is in Finland, they know about SAD since they spend a lot of time in seasonal darkness.
I would like to know more about this.
As far as light entering the brain, I guess it is possible.
I have a technique I use when traveling and want to reset my internal clock for a different time zone. I get up at dawn, wherever I am and stand with my eyes closed facing the sun. It somehow seems to tell my brain, "This is dawn. Time to start the day." Works for me. I have no more problems with jet lag.

If you put in one earbud, and see light coming out the the other ear, it may be a sign that additional work may be needed
