A York study was done on acupuncture's effects on the brain see link bellow:

Do note that this study doesn't prove acupuncture's effectiveness or ineffectivness. The article also doesn't state what areas were stimulated with acupunture. The areas to administer treatment to is a big issue and you'll get diffrences of opinion depending on the source you go to. I've seen studies where the placebo acupuncture treatment got better resaults. Placebo acupuncture needles are made sort of like theatrical daggers and are used in double blind acupuncture studies.
